ACT NOW!

'I share the feeling so many I've spoken with have that it's not enough. It is not, but it is a beginning we can build on. No one knows what will happen in this suddenly destabilized country, but I do know we can choose to have a role in what happens, and it's possible we can determine what happens. SPEAK OUT AGAINST STATE TAKEOVER of AUSTIN

Wednesday, March 19, 8am, State Affairs, JHR 140
We need all hands on deck to oppose HB 274 -- under this bill from our "friend" Brisco Cain, Austin would lose it's charter as a City and would become the District of Austin. We would be under the direct control of the Lt. Gov and the Tx Lege. Our City Council and City Manager would no longer determine what happens in Austin.

Everyone needs to submit comments on this ridiculous bill, even if you don't live in Austin. Because once this gains footing, they will propose that all the large urban cities, one by one, become under direct control of the State.

Texas residents who wish to electronically submit comments related to

agenda items on this notice without testifying in person can do so until

the hearing is adjourned by visiting:

https://comments.house.texas.gov/home?c=c450

For those persons who will be testifying, information for in-person witness registration can be found here: https://mytxlegis.capitol.texas.gov/HWRSPublic/About.aspx

Activist Care Circle

It can feel like we're swimming in pretty dark water these days. Joy is a buoyant light that can keep us afloat. How do we find a way to smile or laugh when things look so bleak. It’s actually not as hard as you might think, and this workshop shows you how. It is part two of our 'Using Focus to Fight Overwhelm' series.

We will be meeting on Monday, March 24 - 8:00pm ET / 7:00pm CT on Zoom. As always the workshop will be roughly one hour with at least 30 minutes for Q&A. Come as you are, take part to the level you feel comfortable, this is a space for you."

Add Your Name: Free Mahmoud Khalil

Mahmoud was taken from his apartment and separated from his wife as part of a broader strategy of repression. The forceful separation of families is inhuman and cruel. These tactics have long been used against Black and Brown communities to control and silence resistance.

Black Lives Matter condemns this blatant attack on free speech, student activism, and the right to protest. The government is trying to make an example out of Mahmoud to send a message: if you resist, if you organize, if you challenge state violence, they will come for you.

Add your name to fight back now. We need to free Mahmoud Khalil, abolish ICE, and fight back against this administration.

Calls to Congress

1. House GOP budget resolution DOES entail cutting Medicaid

GOP Congressional offices are telling people, WRONGLY, that the crap budget resolution that passed last week does not entail cutting Medicaid. This is true on a very literal level, but mathematically, there is no way to reach the level of cuts the resolution stipulates WITHOUT cutting Medicaid.

If you have a GOP Representative, tell them you oppose cuts to Medicaid and complain about the lies they are telling us about this. If you have a Dem Representative, call and tell them you do not want them to do one single thing to advance the GOP House bill, whatsoever. Call your Senators of whatever variety and tell them you oppose the House budget resolution and you want them to oppose it too.

2. Don’t privatize USPS

One of the current pieces of $--- being aired right now is privatizing the USPS. We should all be telling our Congressional representatives to oppose this. A publicly funded post office is in the Constitution — a document with which the GOP has given us abundant evidence that they are entirely unconcerned — and we absolutely do not want a private individual controlling yet another information stream.

Comment on proposed changes to passport regulations

Proposed passport regulations would require people to list their sex assigned at birth when applying for, updating, or renewing passports (three different links). The public comment period on these various regulations is open through mid-March, with each of the three having a slightly different closing date. Let’s tell the feds what we think of this nonsense, people.

Support Ukraine!

We are horrified and ashamed by the way President Zelenskyy was treated in the White House on Friday. If you feel the same way, here are some actions to take:

1. Send money to the Ukranian government.

This fund, which was started in mid-2022, goes directly to them. If we all do this, we’ll send a non-trivial amount of money and make a big statement about what the American people think of the disgraceful behavior of our leaders.

2. Calls to Congress, part 2:

Call your Senators and your Representative and ask whether they have made a public statement in support of President Zelenskyy and Ukraine. Either thank them for supporting Ukraine, or ask them how it advances American interests (as opposed to the business interests of Trump and Musk) to support Russian dictators rather than democratically elected presidents.

3. Send a letter of support for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian leaders and soldiers, and the resilient people of Ukraine

Click here to send a letter.

4. Rally at the Capitol with our neighbors

Every Saturday at 11:00 am since Putin's Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. They welcome support from anyone who cares about democracy. Slava Ukraini! (Photo by Pierce Lind)

Spam the FEDs, cont.

This Department of Education Web site is collecting information on evil DEI programs in schools. It doesn’t require an actual email address, so you can make one up and submit your favorite fever dream about how herds of feral grapefruit are indoctrinating Florida schoolchildren. It will ask you for a school district — either make one of those up too, or choose one at random. Thanks for this idea to Jessica Craven (Chop Wood, Carry Water [2/28])

State Senator Sarah Eckhardt's Take Action Page

With so much happening and there being so many great causes to fight for, it can be hard to know where to start.

The Take Action page is your one-stop-shop for getting involved with issues you care about. The page also features a calendar of upcoming Advocacy Days at the Capitol where you can show up, connect, and advocate for progress.

Please call your member of Congress today and tell them Elon Musk must be fired. Immediately.

(The US Capitol switchboard is 202-224-3121. Tell the operator where you're from and the operator will connect you to your representatives and senators.)

Some questions you might ask (depending on what party your Rep is with)

1. Why is the supposedly conservative party condoning the extremist and sloppy approach that Musk and DOGE is taking regarding cuts in the Federal government?
2. Do you condone the way the administration is undermining the authority of Congress?
3. Are you willing to use your subpoena power to tell Musk to stand in front of Congress and answer some hard questions?
4. Why is Musk being allowed to function with no accountability or oversight?
5. Is any congressional committee reviewing what he is doing?
6. Why have he and his team NOT been vetted by Congress?
7. When can we expect you to host a town hall so your constituents can ask you questions in person?

CALL YOUR REPS!

1. Protest the in-progress takeover of the US military

Just in the last couple of days, Trump fired several top military leaders including the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Air Force vice chief of staff, and the Chief of Naval Operations. His new nominee for Chairman of the Joint Chiefs violates the law because he has not held the requisite assignments (all of this is courtesy of Heather Cox Richardson’s 2/22 “Letters from an American”). If we read about this happening in another country, we would not hesitate to call it a coup. Because it is a coup.

We know that our GOP “representatives” value nothing except power and money. But this is so fundamental that we have to call them all anyway. The military of a democracy obeys the Constitution, period, the end. This is so flagrantly the opposite that it is reasonable to ask a Member of Congress who fails to speak out in opposition to this, where they draw the line of what is unacceptable in a democratic society. Military leaders who are legally unqualified for their positions and are chosen because of their loyalty to the President would seem to fall squarely into that category.

2. Oppose the repeal of Section 504

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is one of the first laws prohibiting discrimination against people with disabilities. It both prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in programs that receive federal funding (including but not limited to schools) and removes barriers to the participation of such children in K-12 schools. It is unclear to me who the constituency is for repealing this. However, someone in the Legislative branch of our country has decided that this is a good idea. If you are an educator, a parent, a worker, or a human being, you have encountered people with special needs and you know that the policies in Section 504 are just common sense. We can’t afford to waste all the human capital (not to mention the human dignity) that goes down the tubes without Section 504.

3. Oppose the SAVE Act

This would require people to present a birth certificate or a passport whenever they update their voter registration. Anyone whose documents do not match their names for any reason, which includes married women who change their names as perhaps the largest group, would be screwed over by this legislation. The more obvious and intentional targets are trans people and the kind of voters who are less likely to have these documents in the first place (poor voters, elderly voters, etc). Urge your Members of Congress to vote no.

OTHER ACTIONS:

1. Complain to the National Park Service about the removal of “TQ” from the Stonewall Web site. This Web site used to say “LGBTQ" and the last two letters are no longer in the acronym. Go to this NPS link, scroll down to “was this helpful,” choose “no,” and give the idiots a piece of your mind about erasing Trans and Queer from one of the big events that launched the non-straight movement in this country.

2. Donate to Judge Susan Crawford, running for WI Supreme Court (election date: 4/1)

Elon Musk made a big donation to her opponent’s campaign. Nuff said. The campaign also welcomes volunteers if you want to help out with calls, texting, etc.

3. Troll the feds, cont.

These e-dresses are courtesy of Jessica Craven’s Chop Wood, Carry Water (1/27). Write to these accounts and tell them what you ate for dinner. Tell them your five best fart jokes. Send your favorite anti-Trump/Musk/MAGA memes. The people who read these emails will enjoy your contributions.
