Rally for Higher Ed

MONDAY, April 13th

2pm

Littlefield Fountain start with march to the Capitol

Institutions of higher learning are supposed to be places of exchanges of ideas and critical thinking. The Trump/Abbott administrations are attempting to remake colleges and universities with little room for diverse viewpoints. I am so disgusted by the Texas Legislature's efforts to dim the lights of free expression and even more incensed that the UT administration and the Texas Exes Association have elected to go farther down that path than the Legislature even intended.

Censorship of students, faculty and curriculum on the Forty Acres and across the nation must not go unchallenged. Randi Weingarten, President of the National Association of Teachers (AFT) will keynote a rally sponsored by the American Association of University Professors this Monday on the south steps of the Texas Capitol. While this is short notice, it's important to stand with faculty and students to push back against the erosion of what has helped make American universities so exceptional.

Moral Monday gathering

Monday, April 13
4-5 pm
221 W 6th St

William J. Barber III in North Carolina created a "fusion coalition" of groups working against the same enemy to combine forces and made HUGE changes by methodically showing up for each other.

This is how they started there...with Moral Monday gatherings. They tried this before in Austin and it didn't really catch hold. Maybe now while things are so dark, more people in TX will be moved to show up to stand against this regime and war.

Movement Call: National Day of Action to Stop ICE Warehouse Detention

From Indivisible Guide & Communities Not Cages

Tuesday, April 14

7 – 8pm CST

The Trump administration is converting warehouses across the country into mass detention facilities — and communities are already fighting back. Join Indivisible, Detention Watch Network, Disappeared in America, and other partners on April 14th for a one-hour national training call where you will learn the tactics and strategies to host actions in defense of immigrants in your community.

On April 25th , we’re coming together for the Communities Not Cages National Day of Action to show up in defense of immigrants through hosting non-violent and peaceful local actions. That day is our first step, and we're going to make sure you're ready.

This call is for everyone, including if you live near an existing or proposed site. On this call, you will:

  • Hear directly from organizers at a frontline site fight about what they're planning.

  • Get an overview and resources so you can host a safe, effective event in your community.

  • Register your actions live on Mobilize, with step-by-step support.

There's a role for everyone, whether you're in a community with a proposed warehouse facility or not. We'll make sure you leave with everything you need to take action on April 25th and beyond.

Organizing to Protect Democracy: Rapid Response

From ACLU:

Wednesday, April 15, 2026 7:00 PM CST

Zoom (RSVP for link)
https://act.aclu.org/a/otpd-april-2026

Readiness takes practice. And right now, it's more important than ever.

The ACLU's Organizing to Protect Democracy series is for volunteers who want the skills and strategy to take meaningful action in their communities. Each session gives you hands-on tools you can put to work right away in the movement to defend democracy.

This month, our Organizing to Protect Democracy session is focused on rapid response organizing: how people come together to act when a crisis is unfolding in real time. Whether it's a policy change, an ICE escalation, or a mass mobilization, how we organize in rapid response moments matters.

In this training, we'll discuss the power of swift organized action, when and how it works, and what we can all do to be prepared to activate our networks in defense of civil rights, liberties, and democracy in 2026.

You'll leave with:

  • A clear framework for rapid response organizing and how movements use it effectively

  • An understanding of how moments escalate and how organized people shape what happens next

  • Concrete tools to mobilize your community quickly, strategically, and with lasting impact

Activists of Austin Art Show

Saturday, May 2

6 – 9pm CDT

Canopy Austin (Gallery Dojo)

916 Springdale Rd, Austin

“Activists of Austin” is a project highlighting the incredible range of community care Austinites demonstrate through their organizing work.

The art show is led by artist Nina Jolly, who shares: "As a visual artist, with a love of portraiture and human connection, I have been looking for ways to use my visual art skills to help the fight for preserving and improving Democracy for all people. Also to build empathy for our shared humanity. I envisioned a portrait show matching local portrait artists with activists.

"I hope this is uplifting for both the activists being truly seen and the artist seeing that amidst all the culture wars and inhumane policies carried out, there are warriors for the people staying strong. I hope for the public, who are disillusioned and scared by our fractures will see that beyond politicians and influencers, there are hidden heroes / heroines standing up."

De-ICE Citizens Bank

From Jess Craven 101/ Chop Wood, Carry Water

Citizens Bank is financing ICE detention companies

Citizens Bank talks a lot about valuing diversity and building strong communities. What they don’t talk about: they’re helping for-profit prison companies get the cash they need to lock more people away in ICE detention.

Even as the heartbreaking stories pour out of ICE detention centers, Citizens Bank keeps pouring money into them. And they’ve dodged accountability for their important role in supporting inhumane ICE detention. Until now!

Please go to De-ICE Citizens Banks’s website to learn how to put pressure on Citizens to stop aiding and abetting ICE.

Rapid Response Hotline-Share widely

Austin Rapid Response Hotline: 512-686-6243

ICE has been highly active across Austin and surrounding communities this past week, with detentions reported throughout the area.

If you see ICE activity, call the hotline immediately.

Right now, the most important thing you can do is help get this number into as many hands as possible:

  • Share the hotline number (512-686-6243) with your neighbors, coworkers, and local businesses.

  • If your neighborhood rapid response group is distributing whistle kits or doing canvassing, be sure to include the hotline number.

  • Post the number on your social media (Instagram stories, group chats, neighborhood pages). Tag and message local accounts and ask them to reshare.

  • Print and post flyers in community spaces — laundromats, tiendas, churches, restaurants.

  • Save 512-686-6243 in your phone right now — and encourage others to do the same.

The hotline keeps our community safer, but only if people know about it. Please help us spread the word today.

February 5, 2025 Updates

From Indivisible National

The House passed a package of six funding bills, ending the partial government shutdown and temporarily funding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) through February 13.

This vote buys time to negotiate a DHS funding bill that protects communities from two DHS agencies that have been terrorizing and brutalizing our communities: ICE and Border Patrol.

It’s critical we use that time to put pressure on every Member of Congress -- especially Democrats -- to insist on real guardrails that put an end to ICE and CBP’s lawless thuggery and get them out of our cities. We can’t settle for insufficient reforms like body cams -- we’ve all seen that Trump’s goons are perfectly happy to gas, tackle, and kill innocent people on film.

HILTON HOTELS ACTION ITEM

From Chop Wood, Carry Water/Jess Craven:

You’ve likely heard that a Hilton franchise in Lakeview, Minnesota told ICE yesterday they would no longer let them stay on their property.

The backlash from the right wing was so intense they now appear to have apologized and restored the reservations.

This is a bummer, but worse is that Hilton corporate not only didn’t stand with them, but came out with a statement saying this franchise’s actions were “not reflective of Hilton values.” They seem to have also threatened to remove them from the Hilton network.

Hilton’s values, in other words, are to allow kidnappers and lawless thugs to stay at their chains so they can get a comfortable rest while destroying lives.

So let’s write Hilton corporate once again and tell them that their position is shameful. I, for one, also told them I’d be boycotting them going forward.

Law professor Anne Mitchell, Esq. posted her excellent letter on Threads.

The email address she used is is hilton.comments@hilton.com but when I messaged Hilton customer service the email address they told me to use is Hiltonhonors@hilton.com. Since the first email address is posted on their Facebook page.

I’m assuming either is fine but again, the rep I spoke to suggested using the one in bold.

If you’re a Hilton Honors member it’s likely better to go through their webform so they know you’re a customer.

US Citizen Disappeared by ICE

URGENT: Call/email the San Antonio ICE field office (210-564-3300) (Sanantonio.outreach@ice.dhs.gov) to demand the whereabouts of five-year-old US citizen Génesis Ester Gutiérrez Castellanos. After an arrest Monday morning, Génesis and her mother were transferred to ICE by APD and have not been heard of since. She does not appear in multiple databases, including ICE, ORR, CPS, or any of the Central Texas immigration detention facilities. The family is urging Génesis be found so they can begin custody arrangements in order for Génesis to be with her family while her mother is detained.

This is a blatant violation of Génesis' constitutional rights. Please call and share with your networks!

CALL TO ACTION

Governor Abbott signed a bill requiring local law enforcement to help ICE. But we have more bad and less bad options.

Call and Email Travis County Sheriff Hernandez and ask her to adopt the Warrant Option Under 287(g). Section 287(g) of the federal Immigration and Nationality Act requires local law enforcement to cooperate with ICE! The warrant option is essentially the least of the 3 evils!

Office Number: 512-854-9788

Email: sally.hernandez@traviscountytx.gov

Main Talking Points:

  • Enhance Public Safety: Focus on serious criminals

  • Due Process Protection: Ensures individuals are only apprehended based on legal grounds

  • Builds Community Trust: Shows a commitment to fair policing

  • Resource Allocation: Allows law enforcement to dedicate resources to serious offenders

Sample Email:

Sheriff Hernandez,

I am writing to formally request that you choose to participate in the 287(g) program by utilizing the warrant option. This approach aligns with best practices for immigration enforcement while maintaining community trust and safety. Thank you for your consideration.

Extra Credit: Contact your Travis County Commissioner and demand that they pass a resolution in support of the Warrant option. Find your Commissioner HERE.

Slow down ICE with Signs of Solidarity

Masked ICE agents are raiding businesses and workplaces in broad daylight, rounding up our neighbors and purposefully cultivating an atmosphere of chaos and fear. We need business leaders to stand their ground and show immigrant communities we stand with them.

Our Signs of Solidarity program is how you can help make that happen! We’re asking Indivisibles to visit local businesses, speak to small business owners or store managers, and distribute signs that do two things:

  1. Clearly mark "Staff Only" areas to create safe zones where ICE can’t legally operate without a signed judicial warrant

  2. Unequivocally show they stand WITH immigrant workers and clientele and AGAINST Trump’s secret police tactics

Once you’ve signed on below, we’ll give you everything you need to succeed, like guidelines for speaking to businesses, tools to track progress/success, and the signs you’ll help businesses post.

Tell Congress: No Troops on Our Streets

From ACLU:

The Trump administration reportedly plans to deploy 2,000 National Guard troops to ICE detention centers nationwide. They have already started using military bases for detaining immigrants.

The National Guard should focus on assisting with true emergencies, like natural disaster responses, not carrying out Trump's anti-immigrant policies.

Make no mistake: This move is dangerous for troops and civilians alike – and takes the National Guard away from necessary jobs in their communities.

Tell Congress: Stop the administration from using military troops and bases for immigration arrests and detention. Stop the misuse of the military.

Support Senator Warren’s Paramount Investigation

The Trump administration just approved Paramount’s $8 billion merger with Skydance. This looks like bribery and corruption.

Show you support Elizabeth’s call for an independent investigation into the Skydance and Paramount merger, and transparency for why Stephen Colbert’s show was canceled.

One Million Rising

Strategic Non-Cooperation to Fight Authoritarianism

This is the next stage of the Indivisible movement: Indivisible activists moving their friends, family, and acquaintances from doomscrolling to active resistance. It is vital to our ability to slow down, stop, and ultimately defeat Trump’s authoritarian takeover.

Whether you’re an experienced group leader or joining one of our trainings for the first time, One Million Rising will bring you critical insights into how we move forward as a movement in the face of a Trump regime that does not care about rules, laws, or the courts.

This past summer, we’re launched One Million Rising — a national effort to train one million people in the strategic logic and practice of non-cooperation, as well as the basics of community organizing and campaign design. This is how we build people power that can’t be ignored. You’re invited to join us — and lead.

The first session gave an overview of the effort. Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZlemcZNRHVw

TELL THE SENATE:
Judges Must Be Allowed to Prevent our Rights From Being Trampled

Email your senators today to demand that they speak out loudly against ANY attempts to use reconciliation to weaken our courts. Whether it’s the No Contempt Clause or this new threat -- they must VOTE NO to handing Trump king-like powers!

Stop Trump's Crypto Corruption

Call your senators -- Republicans AND Democrats -- to demand that they oppose a cryptocurrency bill enabling Trump’s corruption. Indivisibles recently helped derail a toothless bill that would’ve let Trump keep profiting from the presidency via his crypto investments. Now, that bill is on the move again, and we need to let our senators hear us so we can defeat it for good.

What’s the Plan? A Weekly Discussion with Indivisible’s Co-Founders

Thursdays

2 – 3pm (central)

If you ever need a bit of motivation, this is a WEEKLY mobilization meeting with Ezra Levin and Leah Greenberg of Indivisible Guide.

https://www.mobilize.us/indivisible/event/874938/

The onslaught of news, the chaos coming out of the White House – it’s all meant to overwhelm us. It’s a deliberate strategy to sow confusion and make us believe we are powerless to fight back.

The antidote: Coming together in community to process what’s happening, to sift through what’s important and what’s just noise, and coalesce around strategies for fighting back.

Join Indivisible co-founders Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin each week, as we carve out an hour to discuss what’s happening and – more importantly – what’s the plan.

Joy As a Form of Activism

Always a good reminder including a nice list of 10 suggestions!

"No one was ever helped because an activist denied themselves joy, or laughter, or fun. Lama Rod Owens teaches students that just because the lotus doesn’t bloom without the mud, we don’t need to be little piggies and roll around in it. Hardships exist, but if we are to deal with them, and see positivity bloom, we need to get out of the mud."

Support Ukraine!

We are horrified and ashamed by the way President Zelenskyy was treated in the White House on Friday. If you feel the same way, here are some actions to take:

1. Send money to the Ukranian government.

This fund, which was started in mid-2022, goes directly to them. If we all do this, we’ll send a non-trivial amount of money and make a big statement about what the American people think of the disgraceful behavior of our leaders.

2. Calls to Congress, part 2:

Call your Senators and your Representative and ask whether they have made a public statement in support of President Zelenskyy and Ukraine. Either thank them for supporting Ukraine, or ask them how it advances American interests (as opposed to the business interests of Trump and Musk) to support Russian dictators rather than democratically elected presidents.

3. Send a letter of support for President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukrainian leaders and soldiers, and the resilient people of Ukraine

Click here to send a letter.

4. Rally at the Capitol with our neighbors

Every Saturday at 11:00 am since Putin's Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. They welcome support from anyone who cares about democracy. Slava Ukraini! (Photo by Pierce Lind)
